Working in Diverse Research Teams: Understanding Unconscious Bias

Academic collaboration brings together people with different backgrounds, expertise, and ways of thinking. These differences can inspire creativity—but they can also lead to misunderstandings. This interactive workshop helps participants recognize how unconscious biases and social dynamics shape teamwork in subtle ways.

Through research-based insights and practical exercises, participants will learn to identify common biases that affect communication and decision-making, and explore strategies to create more inclusive, respectful, and effective collaborations.

Whether working within a lab, research group, or interdisciplinary project, participants will gain tools to turn diversity into a strength and contribute to a positive, high-performing team culture.

Our Unconscious Bias workshop will take place online (via Zoom) on 20 November 2025. 

Our workshop on "Characterisation of Surface Reactions and Thin Film Growth" will take place from 10-11 February 2025 in Kiel.

The workshop is hosted by the projects A07, B10, and C01 and will take place at the University Kiel.

Our "Synthesis" workshop will take place from 18-19 November 2024.

The workshop is hosted by the projects C02 and C03 and will take place at both campuses of the University Duisburg-Essen (18 November - Campus Essen; 19 November - Campus Duisburg).

Our UnOCat Summer School will take place from 26-30 August 2024 in Flensburg.

The UnOCat Summer School, which takes place once in a funding period, allows doctoral researchers to get in contact with colleagues and external researchers and facilitates the exchange among the doctoral researchers of TRR 247. The entire Summer School is organized by the doctoral researchers with support of the coordination office.
