[26. November 2024] Researchers at Ruhr University Bochum and the Max Planck Institutes have shown that covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are less stable catalysts than previously thought. Their high activity in the oxygen evolution reaction is actually due to cobalt ions detaching from the framework and forming cobalt oxide nanoparticles. The COF scaffold itself mainly prevents these nanoparticles from clumping, ensuring stable activity. This overturns earlier assumptions about COF stability and points to a support role rather than direct catalysis. The findings, published in Advanced Science on November 26, 2024, open new paths for designing hybrid catalysts that combine COFs with nanoparticles for sustainable chemical and energy applications.
Please find the press release here.
